Clear Lake Shores, TX - Wednesday, July 7, 2021 - After numerous reports of credit card skimming at the Valero gas station located at 905 FM2094, Clear Lake Shores, TX, Angel’s Convenience Store changed and upgraded all six gas pumps to ensure that residents and visitors don’t fall victim to this crime.

The Clear Lake Shores Police Department and Angel’s Store have been working together to stop this fraudulent activity. In 2020, CLSPD recovered two credit card skimming devices from the Valero gas pumps, and the convenience store added security tape over the keyholes and to the top of each machine. Earlier this year, Angel’s Store determined that it was in the best interest of their patrons to change and upgrade the gas pumps.

According to Valero representatives, these new high-tech gas pumps have skimmer-proof security features that will prevent the installation of skimming devices. Only two gas stations in Harris and Galveston Counties have this upgraded technology.

The Clear Lake Shores Police Department will continue to work diligently to prevent more card skimming incidents in our city and surrounding areas. Here are a few tips to help you avoid a skimmer when you gas up:

  • Make sure the gas pump panel is closed and doesn’t show signs of tampering. Many stations now put security seals over the cabinet panel. If the pump panel is opened, the label will read "void."
  • Try to wiggle the card reader before you put in your card. If it moves, report it to the attendant. Then use a different pump.
  • If you use a debit card at the pump, run it as a credit card instead of entering a PIN. That way, the PIN is safe and the money isn’t deducted immediately from your account.
  • If you’re really concerned about skimmers, pay inside rather than at the pump.
  • Monitor your credit card and bank accounts regularly to spot unauthorized charges.

If your credit card has been compromised, report it to your bank or card issuer. Federal law limits your liability if your credit, ATM, or debit card is lost or stolen, but your liability may depend on how quickly you report the loss or theft.
