Thursday, August 12, 2021 – Clear Lake Shores, TX - On Tuesday, August 10, 2021, at approximately 10:15 p.m., officers from the Clear Lake Shores Police Department observed a motorcycle being driven recklessly. The vehicle was seen doing a burnout, running a red light, and being driven on the sidewalk at a high rate of speed. Soon thereafter, a traffic stop was attempted where the operator fled at a high rate of speed.

As the pursuit continued west on FM 518 in League City, an uninvolved vehicle being driven south on South Shore Boulevard turned right on a red signal, and failed to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle. The operator turned into the path of a Clear Lake Shores police unit driven by Officer J. Reyes, who had emergency equipment activated and visible.

Officer Reyes’ vehicle then struck the rear of this passenger vehicle, causing severe damage to both cars. Officer Reyes was briefly trapped inside of his police vehicle and was extricated by citizens who were witness to the accident. Officer Reyes then checked on the welfare of the other occupant and summoned EMS for her and himself. The other driver involved refused treatment and transport by EMS at the scene. The officer was transported by EMS to Clear Lake Regional Hospital, where he was treated and held for observation out of an abundance of caution.

The investigation into this accident is being conducted by the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, and all inquiries related to that investigation should be referred there.

It is the policy of the Clear Lake Shores Police Department, as it is in most police agencies, to have any accident involving their officers or fleet, to be investigated by a third party law enforcement provider. Any actions or enforcement taken with regard to that investigation is the sole responsibility of that agency/officer, subject to their own policies and protocols. The operator of the motorcycle which precipitated this event had not been captured or identified at the time of this press release.

The Clear Lake Shores Police Department and the City of Clear Lake Shores pray for the health and wellness of all persons involved with or affected by this tragic accident. An internal review of all of the circumstances surrounding these events is currently underway and will be conducted simultaneously and independently to the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office investigation.
